Distrac-would you look at that?!

Find time to focus (even a little)

I stare at myself in the bathroom mirror (my least favorite scene of the day).

An entrancing slow instrumental soundtrack flows through my phone’s speaker.

A soothing voice prompts me through a round of tapping, AKA EFT, also known as Emotional Freedom Technique.

Since I’m not an expert on it, I’ll just say that if you want more info on it, you can check out my current guru, Nick Ortner at https://www.thetappingsolution.com

Not only am I not an expert, I’m making unreliable attempts at possibly starting the practice of trying to make the intention to create a schedule that would include tapping … all in an effort to work on increasing my focus.

See? You’ve already distracted me?

Back to the bathroom mirror.

The first prompt begins, always starting by acknowledging the negative, the elephant in your brain so to speak.

“Even though I really can’t focus on one thing right now,” Nick says.

“Even though I really can’t focus on one thing right now,” I repeat.

“I am just too overwhelmed,” Nick says.

“I am just too overwhelmed,” I repeat.

“I love myself and accept how I feel,” Nick says.

“Would you look at my bald spot?” I say.

That’s right, I made it through one-fourth of one round of tapping. There are typically 3 rounds, so if my math is correct, I made it 8.3% of the way through a meditation meant to work on my focus before getting sidetracked. (If my math is incorrect, it’s the new math, so it’s correct. You can trust me, I’ve set an intention to create a schedule to try and start the practice of becoming a tapping guru).

If anyone ever needed a meditation for working on her ability to focus, it’s me.

I’m gonna make a bold assumption that I’m not alone. Hello? Why else would there even be a meditation tapping script?

All the high-tech innovations like calendar reminders, digitized to-do lists and notifications that ping simultaneously across our watches, phones, tablets and computers, are really distraction inventions that increase our stress hormone, cortisol.

I’m not a doctor, in fact I can hardly make it through an episode of ER, New Amsterdam or Below Deck without looking away in disgust and retching (sometimes for different reasons).

Since I’m not a doctor and had to look up how to spell kortisall, the best I can offer is a website that will help reduce your levels of that stress hormone (https://bestlifeonline.com/corny-jokes-stitches/).

My goodness, I have sincerely gotten parallelistically off-topic.

All I was wanting to say is that we have a lot of distractions tugging on our ability to focus on any one thing at a time. So I’ve turned to tapping to touch on this type of tension. (Alliteration anyone?)

Tapping isn’t the only solution though. It’s just finding our own way of turning off the notifications (real or mental), creating a space of silence where we can be alone with our thoughts, no matter how scary they may be.

Sometimes, it’s putting on some walking shoes and getting outside and moving.

Maybe you brew some coffee and stare into the steam evaporatively dancing from the styrofoam mug into the great big world.

It can also be putting on your music of choice, setting a timer and just sitting in your thoughts.

Or it may be trying out tapping to guide you toward a more-focused mindset.

Whatever it is, you have the time, you will find the focus and you will be better off for that investment in yourself.

OK, I’m tapping out now.
